Magnificent Mountain Passes of the Western Cape

The Inside Guide released this list of 10 magnificent mountain passes in the Western Cape. I must agree with them, of the 10 I have visited 7, and they are truly impressive. Thomas Bain (1830 – 1893) was responsible for building 4 of the 10 listed below, Tradouw, Bainskloof, Cogmanskloof and the Swartberg Pass. Which make them even more impressive as they have seen so much traffic over the years and are still standing their ground. In total he built 19 passes over a period of 36 years. How many have you had the pleasure of crossing?

  1. Tradouw Pass (Barrydale – Swellendam)
  2. Bainskloof Pass (Wellington – Wolseley)
  3. Du Toits kloof Pass (Paarl – Worcestor)
