My first outing to the newly built Cape Town Stadium was November 2010. It was built especially for the 2010 FIFA soccer world cup, just outside the V&A Waterfront. What can I say, awesome location, enough restrooms, easy access/entry (even when there are masses of people) and quick and easy for all +- 55000 people to exit.
For events at the stadium they open up the fan walk. Basically they close off Green Point Main Road from the CBD to the stadium and every body gets into the vibe walk, chatting and making pit stops at the various restaurants and bars along the way. And there are many to choose from. This is great fun. The walk back (if you came with your own car or with the train) is usually not as much fun. But there is always taxis and Uber if you can find one in the chaos.
I am not the biggest soccer supporter (big sports fan though), but we had great seats and Bafana Bafana played better than I expected, loosing 2-1 in the end. Now a days they host soccer (now home to Cape Town City Football Club) and rugby (HSBC World Sevens tournament) matches as well as lots of international music artists has performed here (they hosted U2 for their 360 tour).
If you can attend a show or sporting match here, be sure to go. It is well worth it and you will talk about it for a while.
They also offer stadium tours Mondays to Fridays.
