Jakkalsvlei Wine Estate (Mossel Bay)

Jakkalsvlei is a wine farm just outside a little town called Herbetsdale, about 45km from Mossel Bay. They opened their doors to the public not very long ago, but has surely made an impression among all. Over December holidays it is highly recommended to book in advance.

We visited over the peak season and made a reservation for the 10:00 am sitting. There was also a 1:00 pm sitting and a 4:00pm sitting (they close later in the evenings over the festive season). Some of the people in our group wanted to do their mountain bike route before our reservation, there are a few short routes to choose from and shower facilities available (you might have to wait in a queue over busy times). Their menu mainly consists of pizza and cheese platter items, for you to make up your own platter. You can choose from a variety of items, mostly locally sourced and it is served in it’s packaging so you can take home whatever is left. Yes, you do get a jar of preserved figs not just 1 or 2 figs. We nibbled on some biltong and cheese while we waited for the rest of the group to arrive and cooled down with their very own craft beer. I had the Jackal lager and my husband the Wolf ale, both comes recommended.

When everyone got settled in, we ordered some of their sauvignon blanc (which was refilled) and pizza’s. For the little ones, each a chocolate milk drink in the cutest little bottles. They were very busy on the day so we did wait slightly long for our food, but it didn’t bother anyone as there were live music to enjoy and we took turns supervising the kids on the jumping castle and jungle gym. They really have some delicious thin based pizza baked in a wood-fired oven. We ordered a pizza with rocket, peppadew, olives, bacon and feta to share. YUM! And we ordered another 14 bottles of wine to take home for the rest of the holiday, some Le Perle Rose, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mount Cuvee (all from the Jakkalsvlei range).
